Urban furniture refers to every tool and object in urban spaces (including public spaces, plazas, passages, and roads) that can serve a public function. While designing residential furniture concerns the aesthetic and functional preferences of one, or a group of, individual(s), designing urban furniture requires attention to diverse aspects and different scopes. The aesthetic element of a piece of urban furniture, for instance, should have a relatively universal character and satisfy the taste of a big group of people—a society. Furthermore, in designing urban furniture there are several considerations (such as legal, climatic, and cultural) that might not be drastically central to the design of interior furniture for residential spaces. Therefore, the design of urban furniture, in contrast with the design of interior residential furniture, is largely dependent on urban sociology, on the lived experience of a city, and on a sort of urban knowledge.
